History of the Polo shirt
The polo shirt was designed in the 1920s by French tennis champion René Lacoste. In those days, according to tennis etiquette, one played in a white long-sleeved shirt. The hot American summers made wearing these shirts uncomfortable. Lacoste designed the polo shirt for his own use and first wore it in 1926. In 1933, Lacoste launched the polo shirt. This was a great success. The Lacoste name has become inseparable from the polo shirt. It wasn’t until the 1960s that the polo shirt stepped out of its sporting context and became commonplace in the street scene.
